![]() Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Video) Monty Python and the Holy Grail (DVD) |
This is my favourite of all the Monty Python movies and they are all comic classics. This movie is just laugh after laugh. Even though it's beginning to show its age, in a weird way this makes it even more funny. The ending is all screwed up and many people don't like it, but it's true to the Monty Python spirit. A must have. |
![]() Monty Python's Life of Brian (Video) Monty Python's Life of Brian (DVD) |
All I have to say about this movie is that it's Monty Python and it's pratically as funny as the Holy Grail. Also a must have. If nothing else, Brits know their comedy. |
![]() Austin Powers Collection (Video) Powers Pack (DVD) |
These packs contain both Austin Powers movies. They are a parody/satire of the James Bond movies and 60's culture and feature Mike Myers as both Austin Powers (the good guy) and Dr. Evil (guess what he is). In the second one he also plays Fat Bastard. They've got great music and humour. They also have a beautiful female protagonist (Liz Hurley in the first one, and Heather Graham in the second). While, in the second movie, many of the jokes are repeated in a slightly different way from the first, it still is pratically as good as the first and deserves to be here. Especially because of the additon of Mini-Me. |
![]() American Beauty (The Awards Edition) (Video) American Beauty (The Awards Edition) (DVD) |
This dark and disturbing comedy was met with critical aclaim, for good reason. Just about everything in this movies is brilliant. While it isn't as funny as many other movies on this list, it's first and foremost a work of art. There isn't a single normal character in this film and some of them are genuinely scary. There are lots of lessons of life scattered through this film, and you have to watch is a couple of times just to fully appreciate its depth. |
![]() Spaceballs (Video) Spaceballs (DVD) |
A Mel Brooks film that's a spoof of all the famous science fiction shows and movies of its time (it's starting to age). Extremely funny with typical Mel Brooks humour. His brand of humour is very good, and is the reason why his many of his movies are on this list. It mainly targets Star Wars but other shows/movies get a nod. |
![]() Galaxy Quest (Video) Galaxy Quest (DVD) |
Galaxy Quest is a parody of Star Trek and its fans. It stars Tim Allen and Alan Rickmen, who are both very good comedic actors. This movie can only be appreciated to its full potential by fans of Star Trek or at least by people who've watched it a couple of times, but its still funny to those who haven't. Extremely funny and well done. |
![]() Dogma (Video) Dogma (DVD) |
People's opinions vary greatly of this movie. I personally think its great. Religious Catholics, and religious people in general, would take offence at it. It stars Alan Rickman as the pissed-off messenger of God, and Chris Rock (famous stand-up comedian) as the 13th apostle. It also stars Jay and Silent Bob, who feature in every Kevin Smith movie, and who are incredibly funny. |
![]() There's Something About Mary (Video) There's Something About Mary (DVD) |
This movie is a true classic. You can often find it in lists of the funniest movies of all time. The humour is less slapstick and over-the-top than lots of other comedy movies, which is a relief. There are some absolutely hilarious scenes, but the best one is right at the beginning with the infamous incident of the protaginist's weiner being "scrambled". Cameron Diaz and Matt Dillon are in it./TD> |
![]() American Pie (Video) American Pie (DVD) |
This teen comedy about four friends trying to be laid before graduation, was expected to be corny by just about everyone. It turned out to be incredibly funny and much more "tasteful" than many other comedies about the same subject. Good script and performance by Mena Suvari and Jason Biggs. This is the unrated version, so many things that were cut out for the cinemas are on this. |
![]() South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (Video) South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (DVD) |
Let me start out by saying that many people who don't like South Park, actually loved the movie. It's very clever and funny, and can be classified as a musical. Many hilarous songs aboudn through this movie. Some reviews actually said this was one of the cleverest satires of recent years. Warning: this movie has an incredible amount of swearing. |
![]() Robin Hood: Men in Tights (Video) No DVD |
All I have to say about this movie, and all the other Mel Brooks movies on this list, is that it's a Mel Brooks film and as such just brilliant. |
![]() History of the World - Pt. 1 (Video) History of the World - Pt. 1 (DVD) |
Mel Brooks. |
![]() Young Frankenstein (Video) Young Frankenstein: Special Edition (DVD) |
Mel Brooks again. |
![]() The Naked Gun (Video) The Naked Gun (DVD) |
This film, starring Leslie Neilson, can be a bit corny at times but that's because with so many over-the-top and raucous jokes, the law of averages says that there will be quite a few corny ones. The other two in the series are really similar and I thought that I'd just put this one as an example of the others; it's probably the best one anyway. |
