SUGGESTED TV SHOWS

SCI-FI

Farscape This show was made in Australia in association with Jim Henson's Creature Shop and as such you would expect it to be for little kids, but it's not. Yes, some of the aliens do look too cute and cuddly, but this show is very deep underneath the surface and contains many episodes that challenge our morales. It's set in the present with an earth scientist, John Crichton, accidentally opening up a wormhole when doing an experiment and being sent off to the other side of the universe where all types of weird aliens await.

Star Trek: TNG This is arguably the best Star Trek series. While not being incredibly dated with bad acting like the original series, this one still manages to have well-written epsiodes that make us think but keep us intrigued. This series first introduced many now classic races, like the Ferengi, Cardassians, Borg, and the Q. It also introduced some classic characters like Data.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine This is nearly on par with ST:TNG. Many fans of Star Trek don't like it because there's too much action, does anyone else find that scary? Instead of actively exploring, like the other series of Star trek, in this one they stay on a space station which is right next to a stable wormhole to a far portion of the galaxy. So the danger and new things come to them. It's much darker than the other series as well.

Star Trek Voyager This series isn't as good as the previosu two, but better than the original series. Its saving grace is that it has a lot of action and some humour. It also has Jeri Ryan, enough said about her. This show has some good episodes and then it has some bad ones. It's not like ST:TNG where they're all good, or Jesse where they're all bad. They use many done to death plots. The special effects are good. It deserved a mention but its definitely not top dog.

The X-Files The X-Files is a cult classic. Everyone has at least heard about it. This is because its incredibly good. The later seasons have fallen a bit off track but they're still good. The first four or so seasons were absolutely brilliant. It focuses on paranormal and weird science. Mulder and Scully work for the FBI to try and solve those types of cases. Some episodes, especially those about the conspiracy, are very dark. Later episodes are actually quite funny.

Stargate This is based on the movie of the same name but is one of the rare Occurrences where the show actually surpasses the movie. All the aliens and worlds, well most, are based on myths and legends, which adds a distinct flavour and atmosphere to this show. It's got good acting and plots, though some of them are a bit cliched. Unfortunately, Amazon aren't selling the videos anymore.

COMEDY

Futurama This is my favourite cartoon. A satire of science fiction and life, it's made by the creator of the Simpsons, Matt Groening, and is very similar but set in the future. Very clever and well animated, as well as being incredibly funny. It makes a good break from the Simpsons, which you have to admit is getting old and overdone.

Monty Python The British comedy classic. So over the top that you don't care, especially the intervals of carboard cutouts. All different sketches. They were responsible for the foot coming down and squashing everything on the screen.

The Simpsons I don't think I need to write a review on this one.

South Park Yes the animation is bad and its quite vulgar and inappropraite at times, but this show is incredibly funny. It's about a bunch of 8 year olds with a very screwed up outlook on life. As well as many other colourful characters and cameos by poorly imitated celebrities. The third season was bad but the fourth had a second wind and it's good again.

Dilbert A satire about the modern workforce and lifestyle. Based on the comic strip of the same name. While the animation isn't spectacular this is made up by the clever humour. Where else do you come across shopping mall natives that speak in a language made up of shop names.

Family Guy Cartoon about family life. This is also clever and and well done. The animations are quite good and it has some original characters. My personal favourite is Stewie, the baby who's smarter than the rest of the family and trying to take over the world.

Red Dwarf Another british comedy, this one sci-fi set a million years in the future when there's only one man left alive in the galaxy. There are some weird characters and plots. The special effects are deliberately corny, and they actually add to the humour. Some of the jokes are to do with british celebrities and as such people might not understand them.
